Drama/Oral Language Drama Game for the whole family to enjoy

Walking the ‘blind’

– Trust activity #1

Purpose: Encourage trust.

Procedure:

  •  This is a silent activity.
  • People work in pairs.
  • Partner 1 is instructed to close their eyes as partner 2 leads them around the space.
  • Partner 2’s goal is to make their partner feel as safe as possible. They must determine what is best for their partner (without talking) – walking with both hands held, one hand held, arm around shoulder, etc.
  • Let them wander for 2 minutes or so, keeping their movement slow at all times.

Switch.

Reflection: · How did you make your partner feel safe? What did your partner do that made you feel safe?

Catch the falling

– Trust activity #2

Purpose: Encourage trust.

Procedure:

  • Working in pairs, partner 1 stands with their back facing partner 2.
  • Partner 1 is going to fall back (only a foot at most) into partner 2’s hands.
  • Partner 1 shouldn’t take their feet off the floor, allowing themselves to rock back on their heels only, and should just relax and breathe (may close eyes if they wish).
  • Partner 2 should assume a balanced stance (knees slightly bent, feet shoulder width apart and slightly staggered, hands up and ready to catch their partner).
  • Work until both partners are comfortable in both roles.
  • If students seem wary of safety because of weight differences, explain that they only have to fall a very short distance to their partner’s arms and that this is an exercise more of balance than of weight.
  • Step in and help if you have a particularly uneven weight distribution between partners.
  • You can then move the students into groups of threes. One student stand between the two “catchers” only a foot or so apart from each.
  • The middle person can leave their arms down, or cross them on their chest as they gently fall forward and are gently pushed backward by the two outside students.
  • Again, remind the students that their job is to create a safe environment for their team.
  • Remind the “faller” to breathe and relax. Switch roles until all students have had a turn falling and catching.

Active HOME Week’ Challenge (April 27th – May 3rd)

As you know ‘Active SCHOOL Week’ takes place every year and is a really enjoyable part of the school year for many children. This year, because of Covid-19 it is not possible for this to go ahead right now so we are asking you to participate in the Active HOME Week challenge instead.

ABOUT the Challenge

The idea of the #ActiveHomeWeek challenge is to:

·        Reach out to parents/guardians to support the work that is taking place in their school

·        Support parents by providing them with ideas and a challenge format to encourage children to build physical activity into their day

·        Encourage children to find NEW ways of being physically active that they ENJOY

·        Raise awareness about the fact that children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day

To complete the challenge children have to find four different ways of being active every day making sure that this add up to 60 MINUTES, or more. Children are encouraged to try something NEW, have FUN with a family activity and to ENJOY the week!

IDEAS

There are so many great physical activity suggestions in circulation at the moment from local/national sports clubs, role models and agencies that we decided to organise them into an IDEAS word cloud graphic. All of the activities in the word cloud can be viewed ‘in action’ and ‘in the one place’ @activeflag  The Twitter feed includes activities to suit children of all ages, abilities and interests with indoor and outdoor options and ideas about how to make sports equipment out of every day household items. It’s definitely worth a look

The word cloud is designed to make it easy for parents and children to find ways to complete the challenge, but children don’t have to stick with just these ideas. They can use activities, not listed here, that they are already doing or create new activities of their own. You might decide as a school to suggest activities or to create your own school/teacher challenges!

CHALLENGE Charts

Parents are welcome to return the completed challenge charts to your school in whatever manner is easiest for them, and in whatever way that suits your school best.

  • Hand drawn chart – Completed, photographed and sent back as an attachment to an email to Ms. Sheedy.
  • Printed out chart – Completed, photographed and sent back as an attachment to an email to Ms Sheedy.
  • Fillable PDF – Saved as a file, completed and returned as an attachment to an email to Ms Sheedy.

Send your pictures or videos of you keeping active at home to Ms. Sheedy at msheedy@charlevillecbsprimary.ie

Drama/Oral Language Drama Game for the whole family to enjoy

 Bippity Bippity Bop

 What you need:

A big enough space for the entire family to stand in a circle comfortably.

 How to play

  1.  The entire family stands in a circle and the teacher stands in the middle of the circle.
  2.  LEVEL 1: The‘’teacher’’points at someone in the circle and says “bippity bippity bop” as fast as he/she can. The person being pointed at must say “bop” before she gets to the end of her phrase. If the teacher points to a student and only says “bop”, then the student must stay quiet. The goal of the teacher is it get the students to not say “bop” fast enough in the first case scenario, and to say “bop” in the second.
  3.  LEVEL 2: After this level is well understood by the whole group, it is time to add another dimension. If the teacher points to a student and says “haunted house”, the student must crouch down and in a ghoulish voice say “Come in! Come in!”.The two students to his left and right must use both their arms to make the roof of a house over the crouched student.
  4.  LEVEL 3: If the teacher points to a student and says “Hawaii”, the student being pointed at would have to do the hula while the students on the left and right would put their arms up like palm trees.
  5.  PLAYER 4: If the teacher points to a student and says “Godzilla” than the student must stomp in place and roar as if he was Godzilla while the student on the left and right must cower and scream.
  6.  If you have time, you can add more in. (check the comments below for other great ideas!)
  7.  Finally, once the family gets the hang of it, you can add an “elimination mode”: if a student messes up, he/she must sit down. Go until you have a winner.

Oral Language Activity for the whole family J

Word Tennis

We have played this in school a good few times.

 How to play

  • You have two players facing one another. Decide who will be A and who will be B

  • Person A says a word associated with food example bread and then person B must say a word. If there is a delay of 3 or more seconds the other person wins the round.

Drama/Oral Language Drama Game for the whole family to enjoy 🙂

The Adverb Game

Remember an adverb tells us more about a verb. Example ‘she ran quickly’ à ran is the verb (action word) and quickly is the adverb as it tells us how she ran. A lot of adverbs (but not all) end in ‘ly

Skills for this game: Observation, Mime and Grammar

How to play

·      Everyone stands in a circle

·      One person is picked to go outside of the room

·      The rest of the group decides on an adverb, such as ‘quickly’, ‘cheerfully’ or ‘sleepily’.

·      The volunteer is called back to stand in the centre of the circle.

·      Their task is to guess the adverb by asking any individual to mime an activity for example dig a hole/play the piano – if the adverb is quickly you do these with speed.

·      They should do this is in the manner/style of the word.

·      The volunteer watches the person mime and tries to think what it is.

·      If they can’t figure it out they can ask someone else to mime. You have three guesses.

·      When the volunteer gets it right or their three guesses are up, another volunteer is chosen and the game continues.

Oral Language Activity for the whole family

Word Tennis

We have played this in school a good few times.

How to play

·      You have two players facing one another. Decide who will be A and who will be B

·      Another person chooses a topic such as food.

·      Person A says a word associated with food example bread and then person B must say a word. If there is a delay of 3 or more seconds the other person wins the round.

·      You continue by choosing different topics.

There are lots of drama activities and oral language activities on Twinkl for you to check out. Twinkl have kindly made their website free during the Pandemic for parents.
